Careers

Work in a room that smells like cedar.

We are seven people and a dog. We hire about once a year, slowly, and people tend to stay. Our counter lead has been here since 2021, our pour room lead since 2022, and our dog since before he was technically allowed.

Open roles · Autumn 2026

Two openings.

Pour Room Associate

Part-time · 24 hours a week · Sunday–Wednesday

$28–$31 an hour

Melt, blend, pour, and wick forty glasses at a time alongside June and Ruben. You will learn to hear when a batch is ready. Most people take about a year.

What you’ll do

  • Weigh and melt soy and beeswax to temperature, every morning, without shortcuts
  • Prime, center, and set wicks by hand
  • Pour, cool, trim, and sign the bottom of every glass you pour
  • Keep the pour room clean enough that June does not mention it

What we’re looking for

  • Able to lift forty pounds of wax, and set it down again gently
  • Steady hands and a tolerance for cedar that will follow you home
  • Comfortable working in a warm room in a cool city

Counter Associate

Part-time · 20 hours a week · Thursday–Saturday

$26–$28 an hour

Work the front room with Teodora. Help people find a scent, wrap gifts, take holds by telephone, and refill returned glasses.

What you’ll do

  • Greet everyone who comes through the door, including the ones who are just here for the smell
  • Wrap gifts in brown paper and cotton ribbon, neatly, at volume in December
  • Answer the telephone, which still has a cord
  • Answer “What’s that smell?” up to two hundred times a day. The answer is always candles.

What we’re looking for

  • Patience, warmth, and good handwriting for gift tags
  • An honest nose and the willingness to tell a customer which scent is wrong for them
  • Retail experience helpful; kindness required

Benefits

What comes with it.

Pay
At or above the San Francisco living wage, reviewed every January.
Health
Medical, dental, and vision from your first day, including for part-time staff.
Candles
Two seconds-glasses a month, plus a staff discount that Martin describes as “generous, within reason.”
Time
Closed Sunday and Monday to customers, and the last week of December to everyone.
Commute
A monthly transit stipend. Three of us walk; one of us bikes up Vallejo, which counts double.
Lunch
Shared on Wednesdays, at the long table in the back. The dog is not included, despite his efforts.

How to apply

Bring it to the counter.

Bring a résumé and a short note to 628 Vallejo Street, Tuesday through Saturday, and tell us your favorite smell that isn’t a candle. Please don’t email. We would only print it, and then it would smell faintly of fig.

Hale & Wick is an equal opportunity employer. We welcome applicants of every background, age, and ability, and we make reasonable accommodations in every part of the process. Just ask.
