Kind words
Left on index cards at the counter.
We don’t collect reviews online. There is a stack of index cards and a pencil beside the register, and every Thursday Martin types up the week’s cards exactly as written, including the spelling.
Our single one-star card reads, in full, “Too relaxing. Missed my stop.” We have pinned it above the register.
★★★★★
“Burned for 48 hours, exactly as advertised. I timed it over three weekends with a kitchen timer. A very consistent product.”
★★★★★
“My cat sits beside this candle every evening. She has never shown interest in anything else I've bought.”
★★★★★
“Lit it during a dinner party and two guests asked when dessert was coming. There was no dessert. Still five stars.”
★★★★★
“I keep one on my desk at work. My coworkers now assume I'm a calmer person than I am. I've decided to let them.”
★★★★★
“I have bought fourteen Mission Figs. I do not have fourteen rooms.”
★★★★★
“The woman at the counter told me to trim my wick to a quarter inch. I think about her most days. The candle is also very good.”
★★★★☆
“Smells exactly like the description, which I found unsettling at first. Four stars only because I now notice fog everywhere.”
★★★★★
“We used ninety-six of them at our wedding. The marriage is going well so far. The candles were excellent.”
★★★★★
“Gave one to my landlord in March. He fixed the heater the next morning. I'm not saying these things are connected, but I bought another.”
★★★★★
“The empty glass now holds my husband's spare buttons. He doesn't sew. I'm not sure where the buttons come from, but they look nice in there.”
★★★★★
“My partner and I disagree about most smells. We agree about this one. We've stopped discussing it in case that changes.”
★★★★★
“I did not eat it. I would like that on the record, since the lid seems to expect that I might.”
★★★★★
“Bought for my mother, who doesn't like candles. She has lit it four times now and refers to it as 'the persimmon,' as if it lives with her.”
★★★★★
“I live on Russian Hill and bought the Russian Hill candle. It smells more like Russian Hill than my apartment does. I've been asked to explain this and can't.”
★★★★★
“Arrived wrapped in shredded paper that appeared to be someone's old invoices. Everything was in order, including, it seems, theirs.”
★★★★☆
“Lovely. Docking one star because I couldn't find a reason to dock one star, and I've never given five.”

If you have something to tell us, kind or otherwise, the cards are at the counter Tuesday through Saturday. You can also write to 628 Vallejo Street, San Francisco, CA 94133. Every letter gets an answer, by hand, usually within the week. For everything else, including the one-star card’s author, there is the community forum.
