Frequently asked

Questions we hear at the counter.

Most of them, anyway. The most frequent question, “What’s that smell?”, is answered on every page of this website.

Buying

Can I order online?

Not yet. We have been saying “not yet” since 2014, which we recognize is a long time for “yet.” You can buy at the counter, hold a glass by telephone, or find us at one of our stockists.

Do you offer gift wrapping?

Always, and at no charge: brown paper, cotton ribbon, and a handwritten tag. If you tell us who it’s for, Teodora will suggest a scent. She is right about eighty percent of the time and confident about all of it.

Do you sell gift cards?

We sell gift letters, which are like gift cards but written on our letterhead and signed. They never expire. We still honor one from 2015 that was written on a napkin.

Is there a trade or wholesale program?

Yes, for interior designers, stylists, hotels, and shops. Ask at the counter for an application. Approved accounts get trade pricing, styling loans, and early access to seasonal pours.

The candles

Can I eat Brownies & Ice Cream?

No.

How long will my candle burn?

Between forty-five and sixty hours, depending on the scent, the glass, the room, and how often you check on it. Burn times on our labels are measured in the shop, in four-hour sessions, by Ruben, with a stopwatch.

Do you make an unscented candle?

We did, from 2016 to 2017. It was retired after customers reported that it smelled of nothing. We still pour unscented votives for dinner tables, where that is the point.

Why is there a hole down the middle of my candle?

That’s tunneling, and it almost always starts with a first burn that ended too soon. Wrap a foil collar around the top of the glass and burn it for an hour or two to level it out. Our journal has the whole method.

Why does my candle look frosted or uneven on the side?

That’s called frosting, and it’s natural in soy and beeswax. It means there is no paraffin smoothing things over. It does not affect the burn, and we have decided to find it charming.

Are your candles safe around pets?

Our wax and wicks are non-toxic, and our fragrances are phthalate-free. As with any candle, keep it out of reach and well ventilated. Some essential oils are not recommended around cats; ask at the counter and we’ll tell you which glasses those are.

The company

Is Wick really his last name?

Yes. Martin has confirmed this with the State of California on two occasions and would prefer not to be asked to confirm it a third time.

Can I visit the pour room?

You can watch through the gap in the linen curtain any afternoon the shop is open. On the first Saturday of each month, June gives a short tour at 4 p.m. for anyone who is still there.

Do you ship internationally?

Not at present. We ship to all fifty states and, on one occasion, to a Coast Guard cutter, which we consider domestic.

Are you hiring?

Sometimes. Current openings are on our careers page. Please don’t email a résumé; bring it to the counter, where it will be read carefully and will smell faintly of fig afterward.
