HR wrote me up for “creating a dessert environment.” It was one candle.

Open office. I lit one Brownies & Ice Cream at my desk because the overhead lights are a hate crime and I wanted one nice thing. Within twenty minutes three people asked who brought brownies. Someone checked the kitchen. Someone checked Slack.

At 3:40 my manager wrote “please extinguish the dessert.” At 4:10 HR sent a note that I had “created a dessert environment inconsistent with a focused workplace.” I make spreadsheets. The spreadsheet did not get less focused. I did.

I stage houses. A dessert environment sells a house. Your HR department is leaving money on the table, and also, apparently, brownies.

We’re sorry about the note. An open office is already a lot to ask of a person, and a focused workplace can survive one candle. Ours does. I am in it. I am writing a spreadsheet about this.

If HR would like a letter on letterhead explaining that the object on the desk is a candle, contains no food, and goes out with a snuffer in under two seconds, I will write it. I have written stranger letters. One of them was about a fish bowl, and the fish bowl is fine.

Respectfully, dessert environments are how bake sales happen, and bake sales are how the spring musical happens. I would like HR’s address. I will be polite. I am always polite. That is why I am dangerous.

Deborah, we don’t have HR’s address, and we would like you to stay gloriously uninvolved. The musical will survive. So will you, which is the outcome we are optimizing for.

Tell Martin I’ll take the letter. Also someone left an actual brownie on my desk as a bit and I ate it before I realized it was a bit. It was from the place on Polk. It was fine. I am not fine. The brownie was the best part of the write-up.

The brownie on Polk is a good brownie. We bought one as a reference on April 9, at 11:42 a.m., for $4.75, and it was still warm. I’m glad the bit was at least delicious. Please don’t refrigerate the candle in revenge. We tried a version of that. It became freezer burn in 2 hours and 17 minutes.

The letter went out this morning, with a spare snuffer, in case anyone would like to see the two seconds for themselves. I packed it in shredded invoices. That is normal here. There is a thread, if HR reads threads, which I now worry they might.

Please don’t light two. One was enough environment for a whole department. We’re proud of the one, and we’re sorry it became a file. Files are not what we pour for.

Update: HR filed the letter under “vendor correspondence,” so I am now a vendor, of vibes. They asked me to switch to Persimmon Porch. It smells like a porch. Nobody has asked about dessert. My spreadsheet is the same spreadsheet.

4 stars. One withheld for the brownie bit, which I ate, so the withholding is confused, like the rest of this.

Vendor of vibes is not a category we invoice, but we accept the classification. Persimmon Porch is a good workplace glass. In our notes it has been mistaken for autumn, and never for a bake sale.

If the file grows, send it over. We answer files. We are slower than Slack and, we hope, calmer.
